” I was so worried I would be alone and wouldn’t be able to cope.
My doula was there for me every step of the way – supporting me through labour, helping me manage the pain, and making me feel safe. Even after my baby was born, she continued to check in and support me.
I would absolutely have a doula again and recommend it to every woman.”

What is a doula?
A doula is a trained professional who supports you emotionally and practically during pregnancy, birth, and the early days with your baby.
Your doula is there to:
- listen without judgement
- help you feel calm and prepared
- support you in making informed decisions
- be a consistent, familiar presence
She does not replace your midwife or medical team – she works alongside them to support you.
Who provides your free doula support?
In this programme, you will be matched with a doula who has recently completed her training with Support ME.
This means she:
is fully trained and prepared to support families
is building her experience with real clients
is supported throughout by our experienced mentoring team
Your doula is part of a wider community and has access to ongoing guidance, supervision, and support from more experienced doulas.
This allows you to receive compassionate, high-quality support, while also helping new doulas grow in their role.
What does free doula support include?
Your doula will support you throughout your journey, including:
1 x antenatal visit at your home
On call period between 38 – 42 weeks
1 x postnatal visit at your home
If you just had a baby and need postnatal support only, please specify it in your application. We can offer you up to 15 hours of free postnatal support at your home.

Not sure how a doula can help?
Research shows that continuous support from a doula can have a real impact on both your birth experience and early parenthood.
Women who receive doula support are more likely to:
- have a lower risk of caesarean birth
- have a lower risk of instrumental birth
- need less medical pain relief, including epidural
- experience fewer inductions
- have shorter labours
- feel more satisfied and confident about their birth experience
- initiate and continue breastfeeding more successfully
- have a lower risk of postnatal depression
Doula support can also help improve equity in care and ensure families feel seen, heard, and supported in a culturally responsive way.
